Everyone is talking about the new Fifty Shades of Grey movie trailer. In fact the new teaser trailer seems to be getting everyone a tad hot under the collar. When I first heard about British author E L James 2011 erotic romance, I was admittedly intrigued. So I did what I always do and went to my local shopping centre and purchased all 3 books – Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. I spent the weekend reading and walked out into the fresh air on Monday morning feeling a tad annoyed. I was not overly impressed.
Before you start thinking I hated the book, I didn’t “hate” it, I just found a few aspects a tad difficult to swallow. Readers were led to believe he earned such a degree of prestige and wealth at such a young age, that the private plane, sports cars and Penthouse suite were obtained through good old fashioned hard work. Sorry, if we could all earn money that quickly many more of us would be far better off. I know its only a story, but it was just too unbelievable.
Christians short, controlling temper made me want to throw something – preferably at his head. And since I couldn’t do that I had to contend with throwing the book at the cushions on the coach. When he looses his cool in the kitchen in the second novel, it was not sexy. In fact I found it to be a tad disturbing. The guy has a loose bolt in his brain and Anastasia doesn’t seem to realise that kind of behaviour is not normal. To any self confident woman, she would have walked out that front door and never looked back.
The whole BDSM element portrayed and lack of any consent is of concern. I was always under the assumption that anything involving bondage was to be discussed and safe words to be clarified before any whips or ties made it to the bedsheets. Christian seems to take his role a little too far. He is portrayed as a Dom or Dominant because he had an abusive relationship. What does that mean..that it was ok for him to be a controlling manipulative guy because he had an abusive childhood?
Despite this, most women do tend to enjoy the company of a self confident man. A man who is aware of what he wants and is not afraid to get it. Why are woman attracted to men who are self assured? Because these men tend to be successful in life. They have acknowledged the mistakes they have made along the way and have learnt from them. Confident men are also undaunted when it comes to learning about women because they want to know all about them. Simply put they are great listeners. Men who are not confident tend to be lazy lovers.
Now from the aspect of Christian being a confident young man, I find that appealing. He seems to know what he wants and that can be a good character trait, however he wants to control every single aspect of Anastasia’s life and that is not good…..not good at all. In the meantime I will keep an eye out for any movie trailers. If you have not read the book, I always recommend to everyone to read the novel before seeing the movie. Hollywood has a habit of editing a book to the point were the original story is lost. I don’t think that has happened this time, however you never know.
