I wasn’t sure whether or not I would recommend this movie for a romantic date night idea, but after being surrounded by couples last night I decided it would be more than appropriate.
Into The Woods; even just saying those three words and the tune comes back to mind. Thank goodness I don’t have any bears to contend with in my house even if my daughter resembles one occasionally 🙂 What is it about nursery rhymes that bring out the child in us all? I can honestly say I haven’t felt like skipping since I watched Into The Woods however that little carefree feeling hasn’t left me.
With such a great ensemble cast that included Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine and Johnny Depp, I knew I would be in for a treat. The team at Disney did a fabulous job of entwining several of our favourite childhood nursery rhymes and bringing our much loved fairy tales to life. Incorporating several plots together into a mishap of adventure in the woods was a fabulous idea however around 2/3 of the way into the musical I couldn’t help but feel like the writers might have lost their original script and decided to just throw something together.
I know that sounds harsh but the storyline took such a strange turn when the giant started wreaking havoc, that I felt a tad annoyed. Main characters suddenly disappeared and the dark tone had me looking around the cinema for young children. The parent in me wanted to protect them from the negative tone, couldn’t Chris Pine rip his shirt off again? damn….
Johnny Depp played the wolf as only Johnny could, Meryl Streep had a set of vocal chords on her that had my eyebrows hitting my hairline and Anna Kendrick may not have been playing with plastic cups but she certainly entertained us regardless. The cast were perfect for such strong roles even if some of them had relatively short appearances.
Would I recommend Into The Woods, hmmmm….There are many funny moments throughout the movie however the confusing disappearance of lead characters and the strange change in the plot was annoying. There are far better movies out at the moment, but if you want to witness Meryl Streep in such a captivating role then try and purchase tickets on a discounted day 😉
