As far as romantic stories go, this one made me melt. If I can reach the ripe old age of 102, relatively healthy and still have my wits about me, I would be more than happy. To have lived a full life and be surrounded by my loving friends and family, I would feel complete. Isn’t that what we want? A long, fulfilling life?
Yesterday I visited a dear friend who is 38 years old and not well… not well at all. She has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and more than likely wont see christmas this year. For her friends and family, it has been devastating to watch someone so young succumb to such a horrible disease. I am contemplating writing Sarah’s story, but that will be for another day. But I will say this, no one want’s to leave this earth before they are ready. To live a long life is something to be admired, treasured and celebrated for the miraculous gift that it is.
For Californian couple Nicholas and Rafaela Ordaz, they recently puckered up for a sweet kiss and enjoyed a delicious cake with close friends and family. The occasion? Their wedding anniversary. And not just any wedding anniversary. For this sweet couple from Tracy, only an hours drive west from San Francisco, they celebrated 82 years of marriage – 82 years! And that wasn’t the only special event the couple celebrated. It was also Nicholas’s birthday. For the graceful gentleman, he celebrated 102 years. Rafaela celebrated 100 years last October.
Nicholas and his sweetheart married in 1934, when the U.S was in the midst of the Great Depression. Nicholas was 20, and Rafaela just 18 years old when they said “I do.” When the couple were asked what the secret was to their eight-decade long union, Rafaela replied – “respect, affection and not sweating the small stuff”. Well said. Here is something else for you to think about – the couples grandchildren have their own grandchildren. Wrapped your head around that yet? Amazing isn’t it?!!
According to their granddaughter Leticia Ordaz, a news presenter with KCRA 3 Network in the U.S, the couple still like to smooch 😉 Nicholas told family “it’s important to show each other plenty of affection.” awww – it doesn’t get much better than that…Both Nicholas and Rafaela are proud to have one of the longest marriages in California. I would be too.
