Another romantic movie coming soon to cinema’s across Australia this month is Brooklyn. A profoundly moving story about an Irish immigrant named Eilish Lacey (played by Saoirse Ronan) who leaves her home country of Ireland. Lured by the promise of everything “American” this young Irish lass looks forward to work, prosperity and the good life. After Eilish settles into a boarding home, her homesickness soon diminishes as she is swept into a romance with an adorable young Italian man. Just when everything seems to be going well, her life is disrupted and Eilish must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.
My mum would love this movie. My mum moved from Ireland to Australia when she was 22 years old. It helped having her older sister Molly living here with her husband Jimmy and their sons. If it wasn’t for having some family here, she would have packed her bags and headed straight back home. My aunt Molly helped mum settle in, introducing her to a few other Irish families that had also settled in Australia. After a few years of living here, my mum fell in love and married a strapping young German – my dad 🙂 Over the years they had twins, my brother Connor and I, another son Karl, and my youngest sister Kellie.
Mum has flown home a few times, but each time she has come back home to Australia, she has been a blubbering mess. She misses Ireland so much, even after all these years. I have always said I will travel and meet my relatives in Belfast. Mitch, Rachael and I are travelling to New Zealand in a few months. Hopefully the next big trip will be to Ireland. Reading about all the funny and crazy things my cousins get up to on Facebook is so much fun, but it will be even better to meet them in person and share a few good tales.
In the meantime we will go and watch Brooklyn, maybe even shed a tear of two, and enjoy the latest romantic tale to hit cinemas across Australia.
