I have listened to many of my friends and family over the years tell me how beautiful New Zealand is. I have seen Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit, I know it looks beautiful. I don’t “have” to go there to see how fabulous it is. Boy, was I wrong! Looking at a photo or watching a quick flick on tv just doesn’t have the same impact. Standing at the edge of a pristine lake, walking through peaceful wooded forests and staring at some of the most majestic mountain ranges in the world has been so much more breathtaking than I could ever have imagined.
Mitchell has brought up the idea of travelling to New Zealand a few times over the years, but each time we talked about it we either couldn’t get the time off, had other things planned or just couldn’t afford it. But this year, we were far better organised. We both spent time looking for great deals on airfares and accommodation. Looking for things to do was a bit challenging. New Zealand seems to be the outdoor enthusiasts capital of the world. Neither of us are into bungy-jumping, jet boating or sky diving so finding things a little more laid back was a little more difficult to find.
So, I guess I should let you all know 😉 as I write this post, both Mitchell and I are in Wanaka, on New Zealand’s South Island. Last Thursday we flew from Melbourne to Christchurch – Christchurch to Queenstown with Air New Zealand. I hate flying, but the flight attendants were absolutely fabulous. The pilots actually had a great sense of humour, updating those onboard of interesting tid bits of information, weather conditions and things to do.
Mitchell and I have had so much fun here at Wanaka. Even though it is crazy busy here because of the Easter long weekend, we wouldn’t have changed a thing. On Friday we walked around the town, did some shopping, bought little gifts for friends and family back home and relaxed. We found out there was an air show over the lake and found a little patch of grass just as it started. Yesterday we spent the entire day at the Warbirds over Wanaka International Airshow. Talk about a blast!!! It was so much fun. Fighter jets, war planes, aerobatic displays, mock attacks – lots of fabulous action and we didn’t have to leave the comfort of our fold out chairs.
Over the next week I will post more videos of what we got up to. But for now, enjoy the video I made of our fun day out in Wanaka on Friday (top of page).
