Mr Right… hmmmm, maybe it should have been called Mr Wrong after its dismal box office opening in the US last year. Yes, that’s right, Mr Right hit cinemas across the US 8 months ago! According to everything I have read, it only made US $209,000 on it’s opening weekend. If you are unsure whether that is good or bad – let me put it into perspective for you. According to Box Office Mojo – last years US domestic gross takings listed Star Wars total gross earnings as a whopping $936,662,225! The Martian took $228,433,663; Magic Mike XXL earned $66,013,057 and the Hawaiian flop Aloha made a measly $21,067,116. For Mr Right to have taken just over $200,000 well, that’s not good… not good at all.
So why has it not done well? And should we waste our money going to see it? Peter Debruge from Variety Magazine summed it up as this – “It’s ultimately too much kookiness for one romantic comedy to handle” ouch! The New York Times critic Andy Webster wrote “Ms. Kendrick — whether playing daffy, amorous, insightful or indignant — carries the movie.” Another ouch! With those kinds of reviews, it’s no wonder ticket sales were so low. Despite what they had to say I have watched the movies trailer several times. Ok, it may be all the best bits squeezed into a 2 minute teaser, but I found it rather appealing. Ok it’s quirky, but is that really such a bad thing?
So what is the movie all about? After a going through a painful break up, Martha (Anna Kendrick) meets Mr Right, also known as Francis (Sam Rockwell). Everything seems to be perfect until Martha discovers that the man of her dreams was a hit-man. Their new, but genuine relationship is tested even further as they try to save each other after his dark past comes back to haunt him. Sound interesting? Hmmmm…. check out the trailer above and let me know what you think. I have the movies release date noted on my calendar, so stay tuned for more information.
Mr Right is scheduled for release on the 23rd of June. The same day as the big budget movie Independence Day: Resurgence. It will also be competing with movies that have recently been released such as The Nice Guys, Now You See Me 2, Money Monster and Captain America: Civil War. If you would like to see something heartwarming, romantic and a tad quirky then check out screening times at your local cinema.
