The world let out a collective ‘Awww’ earlier today when Chinese diver Qin Kai surprised his girlfriend with a special presentation of his own. He-Zi had just finished receiving a silver medal for her women’s springboard competition when her boyfriend walked up to the podium and proceeded to get down on his knee. In front of the cameras, officials, and just a few billion viewers around the world 😉 Qin Kai looked incredibly nervous while he held up a little red velvet box.
I was actually sitting in a medical centre waiting for a friend when the proposal caught my attention on a nearby television. Everyone sitting in the waiting room soon forgot about their ailments as they watched the delightful drama unfold. Qin Kai looked incredibly nervous popping the box, and for a split second I thought He-Zi would say no. But when she broke down crying, I knew it was all going to end on a high note.
Qin Kai’s fist pump was adorable. He may have struggled removing the ring from its little cushion, but once free he made sure it sat nice and cosy on his fiancés ring finger. “We’ve been dating for six years, but I didn’t expect him to propose today,” He-Zi told local reporters. “He said a lot of things there at the podium. He made a lot of promises, but I think the thing that touched me the most is I think this is the guy I can trust for the rest of my life.” Awww, it just doesn’t get better than that 🙂
With her diving competition finished for another four years, the couple will have plenty of time to plan a wedding. Their proposal was not the first of its kind to happen during the Rio Games. Olympic volunteer Marjorie Edna proposed to her girlfriend, Brazilian rugby player Isadora Cerullo after their game last week. At this rate, Rio will be known as the romance capital around the world.
