Wohoo, I have been looking forward to this book ever since I finished reading Barely Breathing (book #1 in the series), and what can I say… it was absolutely fabulous. Before I go any further, I feel I should put this in here: you will never find me giving author Pamela Clare a bad review. Why? Because she is an incredibly gifted author. Her writing style is flawless, her grammar is precise and her world building is the perfect example of a gifted imagination. You never have to struggle with understanding her stories. She explains her characters and story environment with such incredible detail you feel like you are there! Quite simply put – she is a fabulous writer and one of my favourite authors. Now that I have said that… I will get back to this review 🙂
Slow Burn… if you have not read the first book, Barely Breathing, from Pamela’s Colorado High Country series then you will not be familiar with the men and women of Scarlett Springs. Eric Hawke is one of the local firemen and has a great big heart of gold. He is a little arrogant, incredibly witty and has a body any woman with a beating heart would love to pay homage to 😉 Eric has taken a week off work and has planned a week full of fun activities. Camping, hiking, water rafting… lots of fun that will lead up to his best friend Austin’s wedding to his childhood sweetheart Lexi. All he has to do is pick up Lexi best friend Victoria and then start all the fun and adventure.
Victoria (Vic) is a city girl. She enjoys her lattes, loves to shop and thinks Scarlett Springs is a cute little town to visit a few times a year. But when her best friend Lexi leaves Chicago and returns to her home town Scarlett Springs to marry her childhood sweetheart, Victoria is left feeling lonely. But when she takes a week off work to join in the celebrations the last thing she thinks of is falling in love. Leaving behind a traumatic relationship and a workaholic boss, Victoria has no choice but to unwind and relax with her friends. but Vic doesn’t count on Eric’s patience, loyalty and kind heart…or his six-pack and arms of steel 😉 Vic may be scared, but Eric will do everything to keep Vic safe and out of harms way, even if that means keeping her nice and close.
Slow Burn is different from Pamela’s I-Team Series, it a little more laid back… less intense. Eric and Victoria’s relationship is front and centre, their budding romance will keep you up all night reading every single page. I loved catching up with all the characters from the first book, and even a few crossed over from the I-Team series which was fabulous. I enjoyed reading each page, and tried not to drool over all the swoon-worthy moments. As you can imagine, there is plenty of laughter, a good dash of sarcasm, lots of friendship, and enough conflict and danger to keep you enthralled. It wouldn’t be a Pamela Clare book otherwise.

Victoria Woodley is done with men. Fresh off a dating nightmare, she flies from her home in Chicago to Scarlet Springs to take part in her best friend’s wedding. Who picks her up at the airport? Eric Hawke. Of course. She made a fool of herself over him last time she was here. He’s cocky, charming, and sexy as sin. But the fact that she’s attracted to him is all the proof she needs that he’s bad news. She would ignore him if she could. But he’s the best man, and she’s the maid of honor. She can’t just tell him to jump in a lake—especially not when her lips are locked with his.
Eric isn’t looking for a relationship. Between running the firehouse and volunteering for the county’s search and rescue team, he has enough on his plate. He doesn’t need to get tangled up with a woman from the big city, especially one whose idea of roughing it is going without designer coffee. Yet from the moment he looks into Victoria’s big brown eyes, the attraction he feels is too strong to deny. Faster than he can imagine, the spark of desire that has smoldered between them since the first day they met will flare into full-blown passion.
But can Eric convince Victoria to set aside her doubts and trust him with her heart before their time together runs out?
