The Light Between Oceans: Movie Review

Aww, you are going to need a box of tissues if you want to see this movie! I cried so much that by the time the credits stopped rolling I was still trying to clean mascara off my chin. My face resembled a road map with lines criss crossing across my cheeks. Between constantly blowing my nose, sniffing and wiping my face I can only imagine how annoying I must have been to the couple sitting beside me. It has been a while since I watched a tear jerker, and well, this one takes the cake. I would even go so far to call it sob story of the year. If you thought Me Before You was a tear jerker, think again.

The Light Between Oceans is this years romantic period drama film based on the 2012 novel of the same name by M. L. Stedman. The film stars Michael Fassbender as Tom Sherbourne, Alicia Vikander as Isabel Graysmark, Rachel Weisz as Hannah Roennfeldt, Bryan Brown as Septimus Potts and Jack Thompson as Ralph Addicott. The film starts in 1918 and tells the story of war hero Tom (Fassbender) and how after the first world war he accepts the position of light house keeper on the remote island of Janus Rock. During his infrequent shore leaves, Tom falls in love and marries Isabel (Vikander).

At first the couple enjoy life on the island, but after three miscarriages Isabel becomes depressed. When a small boat washes up on the shore with a dead man and a baby, Isabel convinces Tom not to report it. They name the toddler Lucy and allow everyone to think the child is theirs. When Lucy is two, Tom and Isabel find out that Lucy’s mother Hannah (Weisz) is alive and well living not far on the mainland. Isabel is desperate to keep the little girl however Tom’s conscience has been eating away at him. Tom starts leaving hints for Hannah, finding ways to let her know that her child is alive and well.

A couple more years pass when Tom and Isabel come face to face with Hannah. Tom secretly sends Hannah a silver rattle that they had found in the dinghy as proof, thinking he is providing comfort, only he is raising more and more suspicion. One day visitors to the light house see the little girl and when they return to the mainland they tell their suspicions to the local police. Tom is soon arrested and Lucy is ripped away from the couple and returned to Hannah. Tom is questioned over the murder of Hannah’s husband and is facing the death penalty.

I wont give anything more away, other than recommending you take a big box of tissues with you 🙂 I loved this movie, and I loved the chemistry between Michael and Alicia. Interesting to note, the pair have been together since 2014… hmmm, the movie began production in 2014, are you thinking what I am thinking? That these two enjoyed snogging a little too much while making this film? 😉 Hmmmm, I thought they looked good together. Hey if its good enough for Mr and Mrs Smith 😉 …on that note, go check out The Light Between Oceans, you will fall in love with all the characters just as much as I did.
