Guy Sebastian Set In Stone

I normally don’t read trashy magazines. Why? Because 9 times out of 10, what you read is made up or over exaggerated crap! Take my recent trip to Woolworths for example. I was standing in line at my local supermarket when I saw written on the front page of Woman’s Day latest magazine the heading “Who’s That Girl?” The photo splashed on the cover was of Australian singer Guy Sebastian, and a woman, walking side by side. No kissing, no flirting… just walking together through an airport pulling along their luggage. My first thought was it must be a fan asking for an autograph, but then I saw the tagline – “The singer steps out with another woman.” and suddenly the innocent photo took on another meaning.

Womans Day

It was like I had a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other – “Go on do it, flip open the cover and find out whats going on”… “No don’t do it….you know its rubbish” 🙂 My defence… I was standing in line at the checkout bored, so I flipped open the cover and had a peek. I don’t know why I thought it would be a nice innocent story. Reading the first couple of paragraphs I knew it wasn’t going to be. But like an addict I kept on reading. The more crap I consumed the sadder I felt. How does Guy deal with this? The poor man can’t even walk through an airport talking to his tour manager without it being splashed all over some tabloid paper.

Guys Twitter

And it’s not just Guy… I’m sure his tour manager wouldn’t have appreciated the innuendo either. And what of his wife Jules, and their two kids. How will this affect them? In his twitter, Guy said the photographer was yelling out things trying to antagonise him and that the article “reeks of desperation”. He was right. I put the magazine down and tried not to think any more about it, but then I looked around at other shoppers standing in line waiting to go through the checkout. Some of them had picked up the same magazine, did they pick it up for the same reason? Will they have enough common sense to see the truth? And that there was the whole problem, how many people will think it’s true?

Stupid Photo

When my daughter asked if she could download some songs from iTunes this morning, I asked what songs she was interested in. She rolled off a few names I had no idea of, but when she mentioned Guy Sebastian my ears pricked up. So I sat down with her and we listened to his new single Set In Stone. I was curious, the lyrics were so moving and so poignant, and considering I had only recently read that rubbish article, I was even more intrigued. After listening to the song a few times, we went onto YouTube and watched the video clip. I thought it was the perfect ‘fuck you’ to the magazines and to those who read that trash and think it’s real. I don’t know whether Guy wrote the song before the fiasco or after, regardless… his heartfelt words are a good acknowledgement that no matter what happens in life, he will always choose his wife Jules. That his feelings for his wife are engraved in his heart and that his love is Set in Stone. It doesn’t get more romantic than that 🙂

Set In Stone Lyrics

I met a girl last night, had short blonde hair and hazel eyes
Like you, almost like you
I had a drink or two, she had a few and kind of laughed
Like you, almost like you
The one thing that stood out the most
Is almost isn’t even close to you
There’s nothing like you

Just so you know
Your love is engraved on my heart
It’s set in stone
Nothing could break us apart
Unshakeable
Yeah, no matter where I am or where I go
We’re set in stone

I’m tired of drinking reds in hotel beds
Just wishing I’m with you
I’m not lying, sometimes I do get lonely
But I’m only missing you
Temptation comes and quickly goes
When I think of going back home to you
I’m staying true

Just so you know
Your love is engraved on my heart
It’s set in stone
Nothing could break us apart
Unshakeable
And no matter where I am or where I go
We’re set in stone

If I had to choose between the two
You know my choice is always you
Cause if this life gets in the way
You know I’ll walk right off this stage

Oh just so you know
Your love is engraved on my heart
It’s set in stone
Nothing could break us apart
Unshakeable
And no matter where I am or where I go
We’re set in stone

  1. Call me an utterly sceptical guy but as far as celebrities go, I always expect the worst. I mean, he wouldn’t be the first celebrity to sleep around if he had. And the thing about music and the lyrics that the accompany them. They are so often BS. How many lothsarios have their been who have said all the right things at the right time. As I said, I’m a sceptic.

    • Actually David, the song was written in Bali while Guy was on a writing trip.He witnessed a young man being hit by a car as he crossed the road.He was laying in the gutter.Guy ran across the road to help, but the young man died in his arms. That night in his hotel room he wrote this song for his wife when he realised how fleeting life is ,that it isn’t set in stone,so you should always let those you love know how you feel.

    • So DAVIDTHEENTERTAINER, do you sleep around? Seems to me only someone who lives that way themselves would think everyone else does. You see a cropped photo, read what the magazine suggested and assume the worst. Guy was walking through an airport with his tour manager and a male friend (his sound guy from memory) on their way to perform at an event. They weren’t holding hands or looking at each other with loving eyes. Nothing. They crop the photo to remove the friend, and make up an article suggesting an affair, and of course Guy is guilty as far as you are concerned.

As for the song, it was written months before, while Guy was on a song writing trip in Bali. He was driving with others back to Kuta, and they witnessed an accident in front of them. They stopped to help, and a young boy died with Guy holding his hand. When he got back to Kuta he rang Jules and they were talking for hours about how important the people you love are in your life, and that you never know when you might lose them. That is how the song happened. Not because of guilt. Just love.

Really enjoyed reading your post JulieAnn.

  2. Guy wrote the song after witnessing an accident in Bali where a young man was hit by a car.He was laying in the gutter,so Guy ran across the road & held his hand as he passed away.He was so emotional about it,he went back to his hotel room, and wrote the song that night. It’s basically about letting the people know that you love them all the time, because no life is set in stone.

    • After I published the story I came across a similar article. In fact there are quiet a few different interviews discussing what inspired him. Regardless it’s a beautiful song xxx

This interview tells another version of what inspired him-

      • Hi JulieAnn, regarding the links you supplied. The story from the Daily Mirror shows exactly why you shouldn’t trust what you read in the media. That online so called “newspaper” picks up bits and pieces from tv, radio and newspaper interviews, and puts their own spin on things. Their Australian reporter spends his or her working day watching, listening and reading, and then puts the pieces together the way they think sounds the best. Last week they had a full article based on a one word joking answer by Guy to the hosts of Channel 7’s Morning show. They asked at the end of an interview if the X Factor judges got along. Guy said “Noooo” with a cheeky grin and they all laughed. Next day there was a story with the headline said “Awkward! Guy Sebastian reveals NONE of The X Factor Australia judges get along”

In the particular story you linked here, they managed to get the inspiration for two songs mixed up. This mention “One saw him confronted by a flirty fan” was taken from an interview about a completely different song, “Candle”. This one “saw Guy witness a young Balinese boy tragically killed in a motor accident while he was on his way to a songwriting camp in Bali.” was indeed from an interview about Set in Stone.

The other link you supplied comes from a far more reputable source, auspOp. But they just printed the original Sony media release about the song. This bit “as part of a songwriting retreat in Bali and its inspiration came from Guy witnessing something that made him further appreciate the life he enjoys.” is what Marlene and I both said. The thing he witnessed was the boy dying. But at the time of the media release he had not as yet explained what it was he had witnessed. And the rest of the quote from Guy is basically what we were saying. This experience made him realise how fleeting life can be and how important the people you love are.

So really the explanation about the inspiration of the song has been consistent. It’s just that one very shonky online source (The Daily Mirror) has a lazy reporter who doesn’t bother to check details before submitting stories, and the other online source (auspOp) just used the original media release for their article.
